Women’s Soccer in the USA

With significant investment, world-class facilities, and a strong emphasis on development, the US system provides female athletes with the opportunity to combine elite-level sport with a university education.

For UK players, this presents a unique pathway — allowing you to continue progressing as a footballer while studying, competing, and experiencing life in a high-performance environment.

What opportunities are available?

There are hundreds of universities across the USA offering women’s soccer programmes, with opportunities available across a range of competitive levels.

These programmes offer:

  • Structured leagues with regular competition

  • High-level coaching and development

  • Access to elite training facilities and support staff

  • Strength & conditioning and sports science

  • National travel and exposure

Women’s soccer in the USA is highly competitive, but there are opportunities at different levels depending on your experience, ability, and academic profile.

What does a scholarship include?

A women’s soccer scholarship is financial support awarded by a university in return for representing the college team. Due to the structure of women’s sport in the USA, scholarships can often be more widely available.

Scholarships may include:

  • Tuition fees (partial or full)

  • Accommodation and meals

  • Access to facilities and coaching staff

  • Academic support

  • Kit and equipment

As with men’s programmes, scholarships are often a combination of athletic and academic funding, meaning your grades can play an important role.

NCAA vs NAIA

College soccer in the USA is primarily governed by two organisations: the NCAA and the NAIA.

NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)

The NCAA is the largest and most competitive college sports organisation in the United States. It is divided into three divisions:

  • Division I – Highest level, most competitive, largest schools

  • Division II – Competitive level with a balance of sport and academics

  • Division III – Focus on academics with competitive sport (no athletic scholarships, but academic funding available)

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)

The NAIA is slightly smaller but still highly competitive, often offering more flexibility in recruitment and scholarships. Many international athletes find excellent opportunities within NAIA programmes.

Both pathways offer strong football and academic opportunities — the right fit depends on the individual player.
